Summary

Impulse is a 2D physics-based puzzle game that uses magnetism and impulse forces for movement. Level progression is based on traveling through a compartmentalized maze. Impulse was featured at the PAX 10 contest at the Penny Arcade Expo in 2008. It was one of the top-10 games developed by independent game developers.

Technical Details

  • I created the special effects using particle systems using XNA and C#. The special effects were used to visualize the range of magnetic fields, impulse force abilities, and explosions.
  • I built the level editor in WinForms, C#, and XML. The level editor allows easy creation of new game content. The original game was built by hand and was painful to test/debug. Visual interaction has improved the ability to test new types of levels quickly.

Team

There were six other students involved in the project:  Andrew Williams, Mike Thomas, Dominic Holt, Joseph Plourde, Ben Solt, and Andrew Ray. The official website is:  http://www.impulse-game.com/
